Peace building

Peace is a prerequisite for development anywhere.

Why it matters in Wajir

Terror attacks, resource-based violence, inter-communal violence and gender-based violence are made worse by small arms, a weak security system and poverty. The community has shown strong resilience and self-drive.

Our initiatives

  • Grassroots conflict mitigation and Rapid Response Teams
  • Al Fatah justice framework integrated with formal systems
  • De-radicalisation with respected moderate clerics
  • Awareness campaigns and counter-narratives on violent extremism
  • Traditional dispute resolution (Maslaha)
  • Police-community barazas and human rights-based training
  • Government-community dialogue platforms
  • Youth empowerment linked with vocational training

Key achievement

WPDA facilitated public participation to shape and pass the Wajir County Peacebuilding and Conflict Management Act 2024. Police-community barazas and human rights-based training on the PLAN principle restored trust between border communities and security forces.

More than a dozen dialogue sessions at key border points helped communities resolve inter-clan disputes, reaffirm the 2019 Khorof Harar Peace Accord, and agree on shared water resources and pastoralist movement between Kenya and Somalia.

Wajir Resilience Initiative

Under the Kenya Community Engagement and Resilience Programme (KCERP), supported by GCERF, ACT and the European Union, the initiative works to empower women, youth and communities to prevent violent extremism in Wajir North and Eldas sub-counties.

International Day of Peace 2026

On 21 September 2026 in Wajir town, partners including WPDA, World Vision and other organisations marched and gathered under the theme "Invest in peace for everyone, everywhere, every day".
