Governance and advocacy

Helping citizens follow up on the services they are promised.

Why it matters

Kenya's 2010 Constitution created 47 county governments, mandated to deliver services equitably and accountably. In Wajir, unemployment, limited services and clan pressure have left many young people feeling unheard.

What we do

  • County institution capacity building
  • Civic education on constitutional rights, public participation and the county budget cycle
  • Community policy influence and data-driven legislative frameworks
  • Ward-level accountability meetings with agreed follow-up actions
  • Inclusion of women and marginalised voices

Partnership projects driving change

Empowering women and youth in local governance

WPDA is lead implementing partner building accountable, gender-inclusive county governance structures within Wajir County.

Gender-responsive DRR and humanitarian services

Gender-responsive standards were integrated into disaster risk reduction so relief reaches vulnerable women and child-headed households.

Enhancing sustainable peacebuilding

Community-led peace dialogues along conflict-prone corridors, human rights-based policing training and sustainable local dispute resolution.

Most significant change: governance project 2026

Amplifying youth voices through social media

Project: Strengthening Citizen Engagement for Accountable and Responsive Governance in Wajir (18 months). Young people used recorded videos to highlight leader absenteeism and unfulfilled promises. Some leaders responded, and elders began working with youth on recorded messages.
